The World Turned Upside Down

This is a note I sent to my congressman, Chet Edwards:
I have been hearing lately about the FOCA legislation. I have not heard your position on it, but wanted to express in the strongest terms I can that it must be opposed. I understand that abortion is not likely to be outlawed, and don't think that it should be banned in every situation. However, FOCA is a direct attack on the most innocent in our society. There must be common sense limitations on abortion and FOCA outlaws all of them.

To make a point, I compare it to the closing of the Guantanamo Bay terrorist prison. We disregard the lives of the innocent, but let human debris go free to rejoin al-Qaeda and endanger our troops and our citizens. The world really has turned upside down.

A Fascinating Article

Camille Pagila has written a fascinating article about Sarah Palin as McCain's VP pick. She may be the most honest liberal writer I have read.

My favorite excerpt:
It is nonsensical and counterproductive for Democrats to imagine that pro-life values can be defeated by maliciously destroying their proponents. And it is equally foolish to expect that feminism must for all time be inextricably wed to the pro-choice agenda. There is plenty of room in modern thought for a pro-life feminism -- one in fact that would have far more appeal to third-world cultures where motherhood is still honored and where the Western model of the hard-driving, self-absorbed career woman is less admired.
From the rest of the article, it is apparent that I would agree with Camille Pagila on very little in the political world. But (as least in this one article) she seems like the kind of opponent where you can state policy preferences, disagree, and let the people decide.

Mitt the Pro-Lifer

I remember this speech from when it happened. All of Massachusetts knew Mitt was pro life and yet he kept campaign promises to not mess with the people's abortion laws (either to tighten or loosen). His articulation of this position is one of the main reasons I have been such a Mitt Romney fan for the past four years.

Liars in others' campaigns have tried to cherry pick this press conference to say Mitt is a flip flopper and has not always been pro life. Instead, he shows a great ability to articulate a strong pro-life position.
